I asked Dr Jay Wortman about cramping while in Italy and here is his answer. What a sweetheart!

Hi Dr Jay, A question if you have any idea as to what is going on. My husband and I have been on the low carb diet for 2 years. We have been in Italy for the last 4 months and lately started having cramps. The cramps as not as bad as the ones I had when I began the diet 2 years ago (I didn’t know then about the big need for salt). But my husband didn’t get them at all when he started the diet. I have made up bone broth a few times that has stopped our cramps for a while and then they start … Read more…

A Question on Osteoporosis, Calcium Oxalate Kidney Stones and the Alkaline Paleo Program

A good question below and one close to my heart as my beloved has suffered with the same diseases.   Hello Cassie, I was following an alkaline/paleo diet until I developed calcium oxalate  kidney stones and osteoporosis. Many of the leafy greens contain high  oxalates and apparently animal protein leaches calcium from the bones. My Dr. has suggested I try eating low oxalate/high alkaline but that is easier  said than done. There are just so much confusing & contradictory … Read more…

How Important Are Good Fats on an Alkaline Paleo Diet? – Very Important!

Eating enough good meat fats, butter, ghee, coconut, olive oil is very important. There is a tendency in the those who are on this program to not eat enough especially fats.  We have been told for so long to not eat much fat it's very hard for us to immediately understand that good fats are not at all unhealthy. Once we no longer have wheat and grains in our diet we tend to start eating naturally less as the addictive cravings that made us eat these carbohydrates (especially the wheat) have gone … Read more…

Fruit, Why It’s Not That Healthy

I just read a bit of your blog and read that fruit for breakfast is not good.    Why is that? Thanks Maggie   Hi Maggie, I know, fruit used to be my favourite breakfast! I thought it was really healthy, but it's not, and for the following reasons. Fruit is loaded with sugar, albeit fructose which we are told is okay as it is low glycemic. This means it doesn't react in the same way in the body as sucrose or glucose which causes immediate high blood sugar … Read more…

Italian Odyssey Part 4

I have been so remiss on updating the progress of my Italian odyssey! I'm sure everyone will be glad to hear that Ian and my Italian sourdough bread and cornetti cravings have abated.  When we order now at a restaurant we tell the waiters straight away we eat "Senza Glutine"  (without gluten), and everyone of them knows what we are talking about.  This means we don't have a bread basket on the table automatically which really helps.   Sometimes they have a bread or breakstick without gluten … Read more…

Italian Odyssey – Part 3

The After Effects of  Gluten Free Canolli and Gelati in Rome Ok, now is time to finally  fess up to a day of cheats which  took over a week to get over. We took Heidi and Mark to the Rome airport two weeks ago and decided to have a spot of gelati and a gluten free canolli (a gluten free canolli in Rome who would have thought?) as we really thought we could get away with it just the once.  Hmm....is there is there no level of self deception my mind is not low enough to stoop to? So off … Read more…

Want a quick and easy breakfast on the program?

What's a good, quick and easy breakfast on the paleo diet?  I have got my old man on it and he is doing fairly well! But I need to get him off cornflakes for breakfast!! Dennis Y   Hi Dennis, Yes you do need to get your dad off those cornflakes! Some of us find breakfast one of the hardest meals to change.  We want the sweet grains cereal and milk and think this is a normal breakfast.  It's funny because not so long ago bacon and eggs were a breakfast staple in the West and no one … Read more…

The Two Reasons Why We Give Up the Alkaline Paleo Program

I'd like to talk about two of the most important reasons I believe people give up using the program and it's often those of us with health challenges that do give up before we even get to see the benefits. I want to talk about the problems I have had, and have seen other people encounter in the first stages of this program. I will talk about the changes that we go through as our bodies adjust from a glucose burning body to a fat burning body. The other important thing I am going to talk … Read more…

Are you getting bad carb cravings at night?

Hi Cassie! I just found your blog and I love what I am reading. I have a long history of estrogen imbalance (PMDD)- severe menstruation disturbance 2-3 weeks out of the month; symptoms: cramping, mood swings, depression, my GYN wanted me to go on the BC pill because my personal relationships are disturbed severely- unable to keep commitments because I do not want to leave the house, fights with husband I know I am unreasonable.
